Overall Considerations

The eXpanded Media methodology identifies several phases:

  • Inception phase
In the inception phase it is the goal to gain a common understanding of the project or product definition. By including the customer explicitly in the team, project requirements are defined. A set of use cases and other artefacts (deliverables) are developed that specify the behaviour of the desired system.

The requirements can be situated on different areas including business, functional and technical.

  • Elaboration phase
The goal of the elaboration phase is to complete the detailed design so that the building process can be started. In practice this means that e.g. package and object diagrams are populated. This phase also defines the front-end presentation by defining the overall GUI.

A test plan will also be establishes that will be applied later on.

  • Construction phase
In the construction phase, the goal is to build functionally, complete, operational code. A unit integration and system test is also executed.

  • Transition phase
The focus in this phase is on the transition of the code from the development environment to the production (and possibly also staging) environment. Note that all integration of the different units to the entire system has already been done in the construction phase. Transition phase will e.g. make sure that the system will function under operational load.

  • Evolution phase
The evolution phase is a situated after the system has become fully functional in the actual production environment. It facilitates change requests, maintenance upgrades, operational and functional support etc.
